Wind no match for vast steel roof

Wind no match

Pro Roof Steel Merchants supplied the roof sheeting and flashings for the expansive steel roof and cladding of the Imperial Auto Auctions building along the R21.

Driving along the R21, the interestingly shaped steel facade of the Imperial Auto Auctions MFC building catches the eye with approximately 70 000m² of steel-cladded carports housing new cars in the background.

The roofing profile specified for the main building and showroom, as well as the carports, was ProLok 700, which was supplied by Pro Roof Steel Merchants and installed by Rainbow Sheeters & Erectors. Chris Venter from OPR consulting quantity surveyors was appointed by Imperial properties to manage the project with Rainbow Sheeters.

According to Pro Roof’s Stefan Marx, the total project involved about 87 500m² of roof sheeting and cladding as well as 1 700 running metres of flashings.

“Delivering high quality sheeting is always our number one priority, thus the decision to roll-form the concealed fix-sheeting on site, for both the carports and the buildings, was the obvious way to go. The mobile roll-forming mills eliminate unnecessary handling, transport issues and the sheeting is on site in a timely fashion,” he explains.

High wind uplift resistance
ProLok 700 is a concealed fix-metal roof-sheeting system designed for commercial and industrial use at low roof angles with optimum wind-load resistance. With deep ribs, roof slopes can be as low as 2°. For the low-pitched roof of this vast development, in an area susceptible to high winds, this was an important factor.

“Having often worked with this product in the past, I’m confident to say that the ProLok 700 system performs flawlessly and consistently, which is exactly what you need from a quality roof,” comments Gerhard Schoeman from Rainbow Sheeters & Erectors.

Material aesthetics
For the expansive roof covering of the carports, ZincAL® from Safal Steel in the ProLok 700 was installed, while the side cladding was done with COLORPLUS® Slate in the IBR Pro686 profile. This first phase of the project was completed in February 2015.

During the second phase, which ran over about six months, the COLORPLUS® Slate material was repeated on the roof of the main building and showroom, also in the ProLok 700 profile.

“It was a straightforward project with no hiccups in the installation,” says Schoeman. “We have often teamed up with Pro Roof, as well as the QS and the architects, over the last few years and we make a good team.”
