Sika’s waterproofing products were specified to seal the roof of Port Elizabeth’s NMMU Business School Faculty building.

In 2011, WBHO started to design the R116-million Business School Faculty building for Port Elizabeth’s Nelson Mandela Metropole University (NMMU). Sika’s waterproofing products were specified by The Workplace Architects for the roof.

The Sika BlackSeal range was applied by Sika’s recommended sub-contractor, Aspect Waterproofing. Sika BlackSeal-Primer, a one-part, solvent-based bitumen primer that improves the adhesion of Sika’s bituminous coatings and membranes, was used to prepare the roof surface. The primer can be applied by brush, roller or airless spray, and it is a quick-drying primer. The roof is 1 750m², making the project the largest Sika BlackSeal application in the Eastern Cape.

After the primer, a coating of Sika BlackSeal T-140 SG (0°C), a 4mm torch-on sheet waterproofing membrane based on atactic polypropylene (APP) modified bitumen that is reinforced with polyester non-woven fabric, was applied. This coating is flexible to 0°C and has a sand broadcast surface, while the reverse side is faced with polyethylene film to facilitate installation. Sika BlackSeal T-140 SG (0°C) provides high tensile strength and elongation, and its benefits include being age- and weather-resistant as well as offering good dimensional stability. If installed by a recommended applicator to specification, this product has a ten-year warrantee.

In order to protect the coating from ultraviolet (UV) damage, Sika BlackSeal-Silvercoat was applied as a protective coating. Sika BlackSeal-Silvercoat is a one-part, solvent-based aluminium-pigmented bitumen with excellent reflective properties. It is also quick-drying and may be applied by brush, roller or airless spray.

Sikaflex-11 FC (brown) was used to seal all the vertical joints to the walls. The building was built with red bricks, which is why the brown colour was specified. Sikaflex-11 FC comes with a “very low emission” EMICODE EC 1 PLUS approval, and it is odourless and solvent-free. It also offers bubble-free curing and very good adhesion to most construction materials.

Sika has been involved in a number of NMMU projects and the company is proud to have been part of NMMU’s new Business School, which is the first public and education building in South Africa to receive official green design rating accreditation from the Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA).
