Kaytech’s Gro-Wall® creates the gardens of the future.
With urban greening becoming a catch phrase in today’s corporate climate, the popularity of vertical gardens in the urban landscape is growing rapidly. Professional landscapers have much to offer customers who don’t have space for horizontal gardens.
Servest Landscaping approached Winnie van der Merwe at Kaytech to assist in installing a vertical garden at their head office in Honeydew, Gauteng. By showcasing a lifesize example of a vertical garden at their main entrance, this will allow them to present the “living wall” concept
Kaytech’s Gro-Wall® is a product that can be customised to create a beautiful vertical garden indoors or outdoors in various shapes and sizes. The vertical garden was implemented in the existing garden structure.
The Gro-Wall® system is durable, easy to install and expand, UV-stabilised and can be quickly affixed to most structures. The unit includes reusable moisture-retaining bags, which were filled with potting mix, fertiliser and Axis, a combination that encourages moisture retention in the soil. The plants were then potted in the bags and placed into the modular system.
Most plants grown in the system perform well, as the system provides superior aeration and drainage, thereby assisting plant growth and vitality. Irrigation of the vertical garden is conducted by a conventional drip system, which is installed on the top row of the Gro-Wall®, and the remainder of the system is irrigated via water dripping vertically from plant to plant.
Servest was very satisfied with the final Gro-Wall® creation, which took four workers just two days to erect the modules, install the irrigation system, fill the bags and insert the plants. Maintaining the system is also easy, as each module enables access to individual plants for adding fertiliser and soil mixture if necessary. Liquid fertiliser and nutrients can also be fed through the drip irrigation system.
