Unica Iron and Steel, a leading manufacturer of light and medium structural steel, is located in Babelegi, Pretoria. The company melts iron scrap and rolls the resultant billets into structural steel, instead of using iron ore. This fully integrated mini steel plant is the first of its kind in South Africa, with the concept originating from China and India.
Established in 2006
The company was established in 2006 and has a good reputation for manufacturing high-quality light structural sections. They continue to pioneer secondary steel manufacturing in South Africa through increasing capacity, product innovation and enhancing quality controls to ensure top-quality products.
The light structural commercial sections include:
- Window sections.
- Square bar.
- Angle iron.
The managing director, Mohammed Qasim, says: “We believe that the strength of our product is also the strength of our business. By ensuring a top-quality product, we will continue to grow the secondary steel market and remain a leading manufacturer in this area.”
Mission dedicated to growth and improvement
Qasim says their mission is to achieve a dedicated approach and continuous growth and improvement – Unica Iron and Steel must be economically, environmentally and socially sustainable.
In support of these goals, Unica has added a state-of-the-art straight-line rolling mill in its operations to give it an edge over its competitors in producing high-quality structural sections. It will also enable Unica to add more value to its product range.
World-class ISO accreditation
Intent on innovation and the highest quality standards, Unica is proud to be the first steel mill in South Africa to receive all the ISO integrated management systems accreditations: ISO9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018.
The company has also acquired ISO 17025 accreditation for its world-class in-house laboratory, featuring sophisticated equipment for accurate testing, enabling Unica to issue the 3.1 certificates to its customers. Qasim says: “Unica has established and developed the local South African market for its sections and now it is ready to open its doors for the rest of Africa.”
