Africa Thermal Insulations (ATI) is pleased to confirm that its insulation products are already tested and certified as per the new fire regulations that came into effect on 31 December 2024.
The revision of SANS 10400-T Fire Protection contains changes regarding the classification of insulation products, with more stringent and detailed ratings.
Specifically, the construction products classification EN 13501-1 Fire classification of construction products and building elements – Part 1: Classification using data from reaction to fire tests (SANS 53501-1).
Local impact
Most locally manufactured products achieve an A/A1 and B/B1/2/H&V fire classification, with very little differentiation when classified according to SANS 428. Under the new regulations, manufacturers are required to re-test before obtaining a classification for their products.
Proven compliance
ATI has already conducted the required reaction to fire tests for some of our products, in good time for the December deadline.
Testing of the products was conducted by IGNIS Testing, and the certificate of compliance issued by the Thermal Insulation Products and Systems Association South Africa (TIPSASA).
Positive results
ATI products achieved the following certificates of compliance, in accordance with SANS 53501-1 (EN13501-1):
- Alucool Foil Faced 135mm glass mineral wool insulation has obtained a classification of A2-s1,d0.
- Alucool White Faced 135mm glass mineral wool insulation has obtained a classification of A2-s1,d0.
- Alucool Black 135mm glass mineral wool insulation has obtained a classification of A2-s3,d1
- Alubrite Radiant Barrier Foil both sides have obtained a classification of A2 – s1, d0.
Fire classes
The main part of the classification is its letter – A1, A2, B, C, D, E and F – where A is the highest level of performance and F the lowest. Visit the Class of Building Occupancy to see the Performance requirements equal or better.
Next is a smoke classification of s1 (absent or weak), s2 (average) or s3 (high).
The third part is a classification of flaming droplets, where d0 is the best level of performance (absent) then d1 (very low) and d2 is the worst level (high).
ATI continues to deliver reliable insulation solutions and products.
