A Track history to envy – In ultra-heavy applications

Polyscreed flooring products are synonymous with ultra-heavy duty applications for both commercial and industrial environments. Technical Finishes has had great success with this product for over 25 years.

We have completed numerous projects in this period, some of which include Workshop car-lift working surfaces for BMW, Mercedes, Toyota, Volvo and Audi for some 20 years; Receiving and storage cold rooms for Shoprite, Checkers and OK Bazaars for over 22 years; SA Harbours container receiving areas for 25 years; and Food Lover’s Market Commercial floors in all trading areas.

One of the most exciting and yet exacting floors ever produced in this country made use of the Polyscreed range of products. The pier topping project for the new Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) constructed in 2002 at Sutherland, Northern Cape, was carried out in conjunction with Technical Finishes

In engineering terms, this pier is an annulus with a 14,2 m inside diameter and a 15,2 m outside diameter. This surface supports a 45-tonne telescope and its rotational mechanism with consummate ease.

This performance is achieved by having the working surface laid and finished to a maximum tolerance of 0,5 mm over the full 15,2 m diameter, polished to a mirror finish to construct the desired accuracy. This finish minimises the friction of the surface to ensure reliably smooth movement of the telescope, making use of the air cushion movement system.

Accuracy unheard of in the industrial flooring environment

The challenge for both manufacturer and installation teams was to achieve the design, performance tolerances and accuracy in a fairly hostile environment where extremes of temperature show ranges of 45°C, typical of those of a desert region in  the Karoo and, importantly, hundreds of miles from anywhere.

Those who regularly lay concrete would appreciate that the shrinkage potential for a polymer-modified concrete product under these conditions is significant and thus the selection of product and additive to meet the challenges presented was no mean feat. Installation of product with continual measurement and re-measurement by use of laser-light instrumentation ensured no margin for error.

In recognition of product performance and ability of the design team, Technical Finishes received a Fulton Award and Commendation for the exceptional use of concrete. This telescope has been fully operational since 2006 and we are proud to have been a part of this groundbreaking project.

We now use the latest in polymer modification and raw materials to yet further enhance design attributes of this product.

In keeping with this history and the high standards set, the research and development team of Technical Finishes has further developed the Polyscreed range of products using the latest in polymer developments, water-based, solvent-free urethanes and epoxies in keeping with “Green” environmental considerations.

This will enable Technical Finishes to serve the industry in its entirety. We now have a range of highly attractive durable floors to serve commercial and industrial working environments.
