Taking a look at what exactly defines an industrial and resin floor and the unique functionalities it offers the industry.
Manufacturers and specialist applicators of performance flooring systems, Verni-Speciality Construction Products, identifies and explains what exactly defines an industrial and resin floor. Managing Director, Vernon Botha defines it as a hard-wearing, easy-to-clean, chemical resistant floor that can withstand impact and traffic and will not harbour bacterial growth.
Verni’s registered trademark, Supaflor, encompasses their entire flooring range and is specified according to client and industry requirements. Vernon elaborates on the categories within this range:
Roll-On Systems: These are light-duty, primarily for vertical applications, single- or twin-pack, cost-effective and applied by brush or roller at a thickness of 100-300 microns. Typical applications include walls, vanities, light-traffic floors, ceilings and soffits.
Thin-Film Systems: Traditionally epoxy-based, this system is advised for light to medium traffic, low chemical resistance, low impact resistance and is applied by rake or squeegee at a thickness of 0.5-1.0mm. Typical applications include plant rooms, laboratories, assembly plants, light warehousing, walkways and workshops.
Self-Smoothing Systems: These systems are defined as being aesthetically pleasing with high-gloss epoxy or matt polyurethane based ideal for medium traffic, rake- or trowel-applied at a thickness of 1-4mm. Typical applications include commercial flooring, showrooms, warehousing, assembly plants, laboratories and plant rooms.
Screeding Systems: These are epoxy- or polyurethane-based to be used for medium- to heavy-duty applications, offer excellent chemical and abrasion resistance, although not as aesthetic as the self-smoothing systems, which should be trowel-applied at a thickness of 6-9mm. Typical applications include chemical plants, battery charging areas, food processing, bottling lines, kitchens, ablutions, off-loading bays, workshops, cold rooms and freezer rooms.
Vernon adds that due to the demand from architects for decorative flooring options, Verni has formulated an epoxy self-smoothing system, available in any RAL code (European colour system) with coloured quartz aggregates or a coloured speckle to give it an aesthetically pleasing, non-slip and high-gloss finish.
Verni’s client, CJ Pharmaceuticals, required a system that at no stage would put their operational requirements in jeopardy. Verni could assist them with their new MMA system, as the seamless flooring solution cures within two hours of application. It is also a matt, satin finish which cures by polymerisation and can be applied on both horizontal and vertical areas.
“Although there was no cost implication in our decision to use the Verni MMA system, we knew that a traditional epoxy system would not be possible,” says Ewald Oosthuizen of CJ Pharmaceuticals. “It wasn’t even an option to not use our forklifts for 24 hours as the nature of our business requires no standing time due to the fact that we deliver medical supplies to pharmacies and hospitals. Consequently, we are bound to cut-off times and priority routes that require deadlines that have to be adhered to.”
Ewald adds that the MMA system allowed them to be fully operational almost immediately! “The willingness of Verni to work closely with our operational needs and planning accordingly needs to be mentioned, and the hands-on approach of the Verni team supervisor was remarkable,” he emphasises.
In turn, Vernon states that Verni offers a single-line guarantee with no split responsibility. “When looking for a quality floor, a specialist applicator is needed,” he concludes.
