Tiling materials at Ballito Junction Regional Mall

TAL’s tiling materials were chosen for the massive redevelopment of the Ballito Junction Regional Mall, which increased from 10 000m² to 80 000m².

The heavy volume of foot traffic meant the client needed tough, reliable products that would ensure a successful installation at the expanded mall, which is one of the largest malls in the KZN coastal region.

Preparation was key, which is why a primer slurry coat of TAL Keymix, a cementitious powder primer, and TAL Keycoat, a latex primer specially designed to improve adhesion, were applied to deliver superior adhesion to the substrate. TAL Goldstar 6 rapid-setting tile adhesive was installed in 15 000m² of passageways and selected line shops, as well as 2 000m² of tiling to the floors and walls of the mall restrooms. This product allowed for a faster turnaround on site and ensured that the original section of the mall continued trading during the expansion.

The tile adhesives were modified with TAL Bond, a latex-based additive, to increase the bond strength and flexibility of the flooring installation. This was done to ensure the tiles would be able to withstand the heavy foot traffic that is part and parcel of flooring projects in busy shopping centres. The flooring system for the upper levels of the mall were similarly modified to accommodate the anticipated movement of a suspended slab.

The wall and floor grout was modified with TAL Bond, further enhancing the flexibility of the system. The addition of an additive gives the added benefit of increased water and stain resistance to the grout, for a longer lasting aesthetic appeal.

Despite a tight schedule, TAL Registered Tilers, Durban Tiling Services, completed the project on time delivering a successful installation for the mall which has welcomed over 12 million visitors in the past year.
