The country’s top-rated Green Star SA buildings and best green building professionals were named at the Green Star SA Leadership Awards 2015.

The annual Green Star SA Leadership Awards 2015, sponsored by Old Mutual Property, recognises the country’s top-rated Green Star SA buildings and leading green building professionals.

Announcing the winners at the Green Building Convention in Cape Town, Brian Wilkinson, chief executive officer of the Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA), commented: “Our convention this year aimed to inspire better buildings, and this is exactly what our leading building professionals and projects are achieving. Like us, they constantly work towards designing, building and operating better, greener buildings that tread lightly on our stressed planet.”

Highest rated building category
    Winner: Hotel Verde, Cape Town, for its Existing Building Performance (EBP) Pilot Tool rating.
Team: Owner Mario Delicio, with Andre Harms from Ecolution as the accredited professional (AP).
With its six-star Green Star SA EBP rating, Hotel Verde showcases some of the most advanced, environmentally conscious technological installations, construction methods, procurement and operational practices of any hotel in the country. It scored highest in the final rating for the 12-month period under consideration.

    Runner-up: Upper Grayston Building, Sandton Central, Johannesburg, for its six-star Green Star SA Office v1 As Built rating.
Team: It is owned by Tower Property Fund, and its APs were Annelidé Sherrat and Marloes Reinink of Solid Green.

Best quality submission award
    Winner: Dash Coville from Solid Green, AP on the Monte Circle Building A development.
Details: The development received a four-star Green Star SA Office v1 Design rating and achieved a score of 98% of points targeted. Monte Circle is owned by Abland.

    Runner-up: Sally Misplon, AP on the Gatehouse Building at Black River Park in Observatory, Cape Town.
Details: The building received an EBP Green Star SA rating and is owned by Redefine Properties.

Established Green Star
    Winner: Alison Groves of WSP.
    Runner-up: Jaco Kemp of Arup.

Rising Green Star
    Winner: Mauritz Kruger of RHDVH.
    Runner-up: Nick Gorrie of Agama.

“Those winners are at the forefront of making a difference in the built environment. They are leading by example in the greening and sustainability space,” Wilkinson says.
