To determine the Colour of the Year 2020, Dulux brought experts from all over the world together to analyse the trends that are shaping our world. There is a dedicated team of colour specialists at the AkzoNobel Global Aesthetic Centre in the Netherlands who work on the annual trends report called Colour Futures*. These trends include technology, our desire to tell stories, to delight the senses and experience awe, to be more caring and to explore what makes us human. The theme for 2020 is all about human touch.
At Dulux’s Aesthetics Centre, the colour experts considered how these trends come to life through colour and how they could be used in places where we live, work, learn, heal and unwind.
The 2020 Colour of the Year, Tranquil Dawn, was inspired by the morning sky and Dulux has developed four complementary colour palettes for consumers to enhance a broad range of environments.
Tranquil Dawn is a cool-tone shade of green that is meant to offer an antidote to an increasingly disconnected modern society. This versatile colour of 2020 seems to change according to the tones that it’s used with and can work in different ways in a warm, neutral, soft or bright palette. Tranquil Dawn is somewhere between green, blue and grey – just like the fleeting beauty of a morning sky – making it the perfect 2020 colour trend. According to Dulux, Tranquil Dawn reflects a growing desire to understand what it is to be human at a time when advances in technology are making us feel increasingly disconnected from each other.
Along with the hero colour Tranquil Dawn, there are four supporting palettes which complement the colour. The Creativity Pallete is for spaces of self-expression. The combination of forest greens and earthy ochres in this palette provide an environment that blends the best of old and new, where people can explore different ways of doing things and find new ways of expressing themselves.
Tranquil Dawn can be used with a sandy tone to create a relaxed and nurturing space for focussing on wellbeing and positive interactions. Comforting and comfortable cushions and throws, warm woods and mood-boosting indoor plants complete this light and airy look. With colourful furniture and playful accessories, however, the mood that the colour can add to a room is upbeat and sunny. The colour can be paired with many interior design elements to achieve the desired look.
