The beauty of aluminium ceilings at ORTIA

The Beauty of aluminium

Solid wood ceilings from Hunter Douglas liven up the ACSA administration office at OR Tambo International Airport.

As part of the upgrade to the ACSA administration offices at OR Tambo International Airport, Hunter Douglas solid wood grid and Type V100 aluminium ceilings were specified by Shabangu Architects.

Hunter Douglas V100 aluminium vertical slatted ceilings were fitted to the underside of numerous skylights, which allows for a controlled and effective amount of light to penetrate and thereby contribute to a naturally lit environment.

With an extensive choice of wood species sourced from controlled and registered forests, the designer in this case opted for Western Red Cedar. The wood slats can be treated in a clear lacquer or can be stained to colour match any species. In addition, the solid wood is impregnated with a fire-retardant treatment which is critical to achieve the fire ratings required by the relative authorities worldwide.

The ceilings were successfully installed by Abbeycon with the support of the Hunter Douglas technical team, who provided a full set of detailed drawings for the entire ceiling layout.

Hunter Douglas’ solid wood ceilings are available in either grid (vertical) slats or open joint linear (horizontal) slats. With a maximum length of 3 300mm, assembled in panels of 300mm wide, the slats come in different sizes and also allow for variable joint widths. This allows the architect to select a module to suit custom applications and allows for limitless design options such as concave, convex or undulating forms.

The wood slats are connected by means of a 20mm aluminium dowel that is rigid for standard horizontal applications or a flexible dowel for a shaped application, which allows for the seamless alignment of panels.

Each piece of wood has its own structure and characteristics, can behave differently and has variation of colour. These effects are typical characteristics of a solid wood ceiling and result in a naturally beautiful and lively surface.

What’s more, the system allows for access to the services above the ceiling by simply demounting the section of panels in the required area and refitting them once done. Maintenance is minimal and slats can be cleaned to a prescribed method, and can be replaced if damages or changes occur.
