Founded in 1987, Fairfield Dairy is situated in Howick, KwaZulu-Natal, and a large extension to the dairy was recently planned, which required not only highly durable flooring, but also coatings that should comply with the stringent standards of hygiene set by the food and beverage industry. Products from Sika’s top-quality Sikafloor and Sikaflex ranges were specified by specialist contractor, Concrete Laser Flooring, who commenced work on this 2 500m2 project in December 2011.
Over 1 000 kits of Sikafloor-20 N PurCem, a heavy-duty, high-strength, polyurethane-modified screed, were supplied to coat the floors of the new production rooms. Its fluid consistency and rapid one-step application requires less labour to install than conventional heavy-duty PU trowel grade screeds.
Sikafloor-29 N PurCem, a product providing vertical, coving and detailing solutions to areas of abrasion and high chemical exposure, was applied around the floors and on the walls of the dairy. This high-strength, polyurethane mortar provides a finely textured, smooth aggregate appearance, and is ideally suited for food processing plants, freezers, laboratories and workshops.
Both of these Sikafloor products conform to international standards pertaining to contact with foodstuffs and provide excellent mechanical, abrasion and chemical resistance. They are 3-part, non-taint, odourless and VOC-free and have bond strengths in excess of the tensile strength of concrete. Their fast-curing properties result in the absolute minimum of production downtime.
To seal the floor joints, Sika Primer-3N and Sikaflex PRO-3 WF were used; the primer being a one-component, epoxy-polyurethane solvent while the moisture-curing, elastic sealant provides a 25% movement capability, bubble-free curing as well as high mechanical and chemical resistance.
With Fairfield Dairy operating on a 24-hour basis, it was imperative that the contractor complete the project timeously to avoid any interference with production.
Although these applications required a high degree of attention to detail, the excellent workmanship of Concrete Laser Flooring, in combination with the ease of application and outstanding quality of Sika’s world-renowned products, resulted in the project being completed in the time allocated, and Fairfield Dairy can rest assured that its new extension will stand the test of time.
