Different flooring types such as tiles, carpets, screed, vinyl, concrete, wood and laminate, all have different types of stair nosing. It is only tiles that allow both retrofit and tile-in stair nosing.

Materials used for stair nosing

Pedestrian traffic, whether heavy commercial, industrial, light to medium commercial or residential, will determine which type of stair nosing to use. Materials used for stair nosing include aluminium, brass, stainless steel and aluminium with different inserts: PVC (ridged or smooth), non-slip, luminescence, carborundum, and diamond rubber.

Wear and tear requirements and aesthetics have their place, with the ergonomic design of the stair nosing determining the final choice. The M.Trim range allows for a wide variety of options to suit the specifier’s requirements. Regarding the aesthetics of the stair nosing – retrofit has a larger sightline than tile-in and specifiers can choose from the different options available.

Safety first

Safety factors will determine the selection of the inserts in the retrofit stair nosing such as non-slip inserts will be used if the stair area is exposed to inclement weather, such as with a partially covered entrance. The quality of the lighting and load-shedding will determine whether luminescent infills are required in dark areas or areas that do not have backup lighting during load-shedding.
