The newest addition to Atterbury’s mixed-use precinct in Pretoria, The Club, is a 4 800m² cutting-edge day hospital, crafted based on leading world trends in day care surgery.
The Club Surgical Centre, unlike many generic hospital spaces, was shaped in collaboration with the specialists due to operate there, so it is optimally designed for their services. The centre offers skin cancer treatment, as well as cosmetic, ear, nose and throat and spinal surgery.

The centre’s co-founders, skin cancer specialists Dr Japie de Wet and Dr Pieter du Plessis, have acquired unique skills to pioneer the only multidisciplinary unit of this kind in South Africa. They have set up a modern skin-cancer management programme in 2012, and subsequently looked for a custom facility tailored to modern trends in day surgery.

Other specialists also identified the need for a niche facility, which led to the establishment of a Centre of Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery and a unit for spinal day case surgery. The Club Surgical Centre will become the diagnostic hub of Spine Africa, a multidisciplinary group of different surgical and non-surgical specialities focusing only on the diagnosis and treatment of spinal problems and sharing resources and equipment.

To soothe the clinical hospital environment, the interior is designed to offer the calming experience of a modern lounge. A Dis-Chem pharmacy is situated on the ground floor with consulting rooms, a radiology suite with the first standing MRI scanner in Africa, and pathologists on the first and second floors. The day hospital is situated on the top floor.

Day case surgery is becoming the norm in first-world countries, with one in three surgical procedures taking place in such units. In South Africa, the current rate is about one in twelve.
