An upmarket car dealership in Umhlanga required specialist tiling systems to install large format tiles in the showroom and ablutions, and to fix granite tiles to metal staircases.
Challenges with large format floor tiles
Large format tiles may have permissible surface flatness irregularities, so substrate preparation was essential. Correcting variances in floor level on the post-tensioned concrete suspended slab prior to installation of the large format floor tiles was done with TALCEM, a rapid-setting cement, to help reduce lipping and prevented excessive consumption of tile adhesive.
Specific products needed for a successful result
TAL Goldflex, a modified rapid-setting tile adhesive was used to fix the large format tiles to the walls and floors of the showroom, entrance and ablutions to accommodate movement of post-tensioned concrete slabs and temperature fluctuations.
The metal staircases were primed with a TAL Keycoat and TAL Goldflex slurry coat before fixing the tiles with TAL Goldflex adhesive modified with TAL Bond to accommodate the increased movement.
TAL Wall & Floor Grout modified with TAL Bond provided additional flexibility and water resistance. TAL Sealmaster Cord and TAL Goldstar Sealmaster 1000 polyurethane joint sealant material was used for filling and sealing the tile panel movement joints, whilst prefabricated movement joint strips were installed in other areas to ensure a durable tiling installation.
