The Spanish tile industry gained further success in 2019, with the total sales improving by 4% from €3,597 billion in 2018 to €3,740 billion in 2019. Vicente Nomdedeu, president of the Spanish Ceramic Tile Manufacturers’ Association (ASCER), highlighted the 2019 production, sales and exports figures at the Tile of Spain press conference CEVISAMA, an international fair for ceramic tiles and bathroom furnishings in Valencia, Spain, in February.
“The Spanish tile industry is the largest European ceramic producer, with approximately 75% of all sales made abroad and the country currently exporting to 185 countries worldwide. They experienced total export growth of 3%, from €2,727 billion in 2018 to €2,8 billion in 2019. The United States market increased with almost 17% and was the engine of growth last year, together with the domestic market which grew 8%, despite political uncertainty,” says Nomdedeu.
According to Nomdedeu, France is currently the largest importer of ceramic tiles, buying €302,4 million in products in 2019. The second largest importer is the United States of America (USA), buying €278,8 million in ceramic tiles in 2019. He says the strong growth of the Spanish ceramic industry can be attributed to innovation in the market, which is a key factor to growing the industry.
“Two factors support innovation, which is creating new valuable products and servicing customers to give them solutions. The sector is experiencing a process of concentration, with an increasingly large group of strong investments in production. However, with production in certain areas being reduced, we want to open up leadership in the ceramic tile industry across the world from Spain,” says Nomdedeu.
