Under the control of Durban-based Elphick Proome Architects, and with Brandbild as the main contractor, Hunter Douglas was appointed for the design, manufacturing and installation of sliding shutters on a project for Consulmet – a specialist engineering company servicing the mining industry – for its premises at Modderfontein.

The slider’s modules of one metre wide consisted of 3mm perforated aluminium sheets of two perforation sizes, which incorporated the client’s name. The project was composed of both sliding and fixed units of which 15 bays are sliding, with the balance being fixed units, all fixed to a steel substructure. The screens were installed on the east and west elevations, with a total area of product of 489m².

In addition to this, Hunter Douglas Type 70S louvres were fitted to the services area in the car park as well, concealing services on the north and south elevation.

Duration of project

The initial contact was made in July 2012, after which the Hunter Douglas Durban office attended to the technical support for the project. The appointment of Hunter Douglas for the supply of the screens was made in December 2012, the site was established in May and installation on the original scope of work was completed in August 2013.

The design, manufacturing and installation was executed by the Johannesburg office of Hunter Douglas, representing a good example of coordination and cooperation between parties situated in different regions.

The products were specified because they allowed the architect to have flexibility for applying the products in a functional aspect, and also allowing for the screens to be moved and not to impair vision when so desired. From an aesthetic and branding point of view, the screens are visible from the N1 highway, offering exposure to the client.

The close working relationship with the main contractor, architect and Hunter Douglas has produced a good result and the project was executed within the construction programme. This proprietary system been researched and developed, and is supported by technical literature and performance charts. The installation followed without any noticeable difficulties. Hunter Douglas discussed the project after completion with the architect, who expressed his satisfaction in meeting his aspirations.
