Corobrik’s Fynbos Geel and Fynbos Rooi satin clay face bricks are the bricks of choice for the upgrade of Princess Plots Informal Settlement in Roodepoort as they are cost-saving having no long-term maintenance. The project, where informal shack dwellings are being replaced with a mixed-land use development began in 2014, and involves the community, provincial Department of Human Settlements and Johannesburg Municipality, who aim to provide housing to all residents.
Total of 3 500 houses to be upgraded
Michael Hart, architect at Michael Hart Architects & Urban Designers, the company undertaking the project design, says 281 Reconstruction and Development Programme units, each 40m² in size, have been handed over to residents in this settlement to date, but ultimately 3 500 houses will be developed. He says the project is being implemented in six phases and is located near economic opportunities and transport nodes, so access to schools, work and retail centres is convenient for residents.
“The two-bedroom apartments are located in four-storey blocks alongside a multi-purpose recreation centre and green courtyards. Security including perimeter fencing, entrance gates and a guard house is provided at the development,” says Hart.
High-quality products important in a house
“The face bricks’ facades were contrasted with vertical plastered panels painted in a bright but limited palette of colours and the two face brick colours chosen aimed to create a subtle variety of natural tones. We understand that a house is more than just a place to sleep and store belongings. It is an extension of the individual and a reflection of their place within society, which is why using high-quality products is so important,” says Musa Shangase, commercial director of Corobrik.
