The upgrade of the Beitbridge border post between South Africa and Zimbabwe has been long overdue. People who regularly have to make use of this crossing will attest to the massive challenges of doing so, given the aging infrastructure and massive cues of 8km. It often results in transport being held up for as much as five days before being able to continue with their journey.
Project scope
The main contract for the much-awaited upgrade was awarded to Raubex Group Limited. It includes the upgrades to the border post’s main administrative buildings and onsite employee accommodation, to form a combined area of more than 56 000m². As the project’s main focus areas required the upgrading of the roofing, insulation and the removal of hazardous asbestos, Raubex subcontracted the expertise of local roofing specialists HK Roofing Construction CC.
The owner of HK Roofing, Herman Müller, says: “We were elated to have been given the opportunity to work on such a large-scale, cross-border project in close collaboration with Raubex Group.”
According to Müller, a project of this nature brings many unique challenges. “Being able to work within these constraints and to offer viable solutions are key requirements for its success. When it came to finding a suitable insulation provider, Africa Thermal Insulation (ATI) ticked all the right boxes.”
Value of supplier partnerships
In this instance, ATI Alucool’s ease of use, superior aesthetic value and willingness to price in accordance with the budget resulted in them being the supplier of choice. Müller comments: “Working with Rina from ATI demonstrated their willingness to go the extra mile, their product expertise and focus on customer service, all while taking responsibility for the procurement and on-time delivery of their products to the site.”
Deadline & budget constraints
Discussions about the project, its requirements and potential suppliers commenced more than two and a half years ago. Since construction started, Müller and his team of fully trained on-site artisans have been working non-stop to keep to the strict deadlines and budget. “Without the support and resilience of trusted suppliers such as ATI, this would not be possible.”
As a smaller business, HK Roofing has now been given an opportunity to demonstrate its skills and expertise in all matters relating to steel sheeting. This once again highlights the benefits of quality and dedication that one achieves when working with a hands-on owner such as Herman Müller.
The Beitbridge project is scheduled for completion in April 2023. Due to security reasons, photos of the project revamp have been prohibited.
