The historic Constantia Uitsig Wine Estate, which has been producing wine since 1685, recently built a brand-new winery. Flowcrete provided flooring solutions for the new winery as well as the refurbishment of the estate’s artisanal craft cottages.

It was critical that the development work complemented the heritage and aesthetic of the location, bringing the functionality of the venue up to date without compromising on its history. With a forward-looking vision, the wine estate wanted to combine its renowned wine production with the latest food production materials. The flooring solution had to withstand conditions within a modern winery such as wine spillages and corrosive production by-products, impacts, point loading from pallets and heavy equipment, wear and tear from wheeled equipment and thermal shock from hot water wash downs.

To meet these requirements, Flowcrete South Africa supplied 1 076m² of the antibacterial, polyurethane resin floor system Flowfresh RT in Cream for the main processing areas. The thick, robust nature of this floor will provide a long-term slip resistant, operational and seamless surface. The wine estate can also rest assured that the floor will be able to assist in maintaining a hygienic, food-safe finish because the Flowfresh range is HACCP International certified. The antibacterial additive Polygiene* is included in every Flowfresh system in order to deliver a coating that actively inhibits bacterial growth between wash cycles. Minimising contaminant build up is vital within a winery, as it avoids unwanted substances and microbes infiltrating the produce.

For the back-room areas, Flowcrete South Africa colour-matched the floor to a brick taken from the very site, which was a first for the company. This led to Flowcrete South Africa supplying 150m2 of its hard-wearing Flowfresh MF system in a bespoke Terracotta colour for the employees’ kitchen, changing rooms and toilet facilities.

The estate also refurbished a row of cottages that are away from the wine estate. These cottages house various small food producers as well as a coffee shop and restaurant. Now called “The Heritage Market”, Flowcrete South Africa helped to bring this customer facing part of the site into the 21st century while still retaining its historic charm. Customers will be presented with a fresh-looking space thanks to the 450m2 of Flowfresh MF that was installed. This impervious and seamless floor finish is easy to wash, which helps it keep its unblemished appearance. A combination of Signal Grey and Cream was used for the floors as these colours tied into the natural tones and materials used throughout the cottages.
