One of the most common failures in SPC flooring installations is the lack of moisture barriers.
Following proper installation instructions is crucial to ensure a long-lasting and durable SPC vinyl flooring solution. The Southern African Wood Laminate Flooring Association (SAWLFA), together with some of the biggest importers in South Africa, has developed comprehensive installation instructions for the industry.
Subfloor preparation
The subfloor should be clean, dry and level. If it is not level, it may be necessary to use a self-levelling compound or sand down high spots – otherwise the locking system could be compromised and may crack or break.
Moisture barrier
One of the most common failures in SPC flooring installations is the lack of moisture barriers. This should be an 80-micron HDPE virgin plastic sheet that is placed over the subfloor to prevent moisture from seeping through. The moisture barrier must be installed properly, with no gaps or seams, to provide adequate protection against moisture, with an overlap of at least 50mm, and be taped into place. An epoxy moisture barrier can also be used.
Installation tips
- The SPC flooring planks should be acclimated to the room for at least 48 hours before installation. This allows the planks to adjust to the temperature and humidity of the room, reducing the risk of expansion or contraction after installation.
- Install flooring with expansion gaps around the edges of the room.
- To create a more natural look, the planks should be staggered, with no two adjacent rows starting with the same length of the plank.
Following proper installation instructions for SPC vinyl flooring is essential to ensure a long-lasting and durable flooring solution. When followed, homeowners can enjoy beautiful, durable and long-lasting vinyl flooring in their homes.
