The Southern African Vinyls Association (SAVA) is the voluntary industry association representing the entire value chain of the local PVC industry. With the help of its members, SAVA strives to create a dynamic, sustainable and responsible vinyls industry in the sub-Saharan Africa region. “We want to add value for every user throughout the value chain,” explains Monique Holtzhausen, chief executive officer of SAVA.
Membership benefits
SAVA membership has the benefits of partnership and a platform to connect, discuss challenges and share knowledge and learnings. As a member of the Global Vinyl Council and Vinyl Plus, SAVA offers industry members access to the latest international information, research findings and insight to new legislation and valuable technical support. The association has also signed a memorandum of understanding with Proudly South African – the country’s official “Buy Local” campaign.
Highlighted SAVA member
SAVA highlights the work being done by association member Sheet Convertors, based in Blackheath, Cape Town. The company specialises in the recycling of flexible PVC. Prior to Covid-19, they processed about 60 to 70 tons of PVC monthly, and are slowly working their way back to this target.
The recycling process
Sheet Convertors purchases the PVC material from around the country, which they then collect and transport back to Cape Town. Upon arrival, the PVC material is sorted, cleaned and chopped up by staff employed from the local community. Once this process is complete, the PVC material is placed in their high-speed mixer and mixed according to a special formula. This creates their “raw material”, which is then extruded.
Sheet Convertors mainly compounds and sell to various end-markets. Their in-house product, interlocking floor tiles, are manufactured on the premises, with the raw material produced in their recycling process.
Issue: Creating a dynamic, sustainable and responsible vinyls industry.
Solution: Collection and recycling of flexible PVC materials into flooring and other goods.
