RSB Contracts is owned and run by three dynamic young gentlemen: Richard Spencer, Ruan Swart, and Jacques Barnard. They focus on building good relationships with their clients to deliver successful, award-winning projects.

They were recently involved as the fabrication, erection and painting contractor for the Ford Package E Structural Steel Supply, which won the Best Automotive Steel award at the SAISC Steel Awards.

Overcoming project challenges

One of the challenges they faced was that RSB received its PO on the day that South Africa’s hard lockdown was implemented. This meant they were unsure what would happen and when work would commence. During the hard lockdown, the team had to remotely carry out detailed shop drawings and manage procurement planning.

Once the hard lockdown was over, the team had to commence with fabrication works. This was soon hampered by port hold ups on the imported steel. They needed to work closely with their suppliers to ensure delivery of the stock required to supply and fabricate the 5000 tonnes of structural steelwork required for this project.

To accommodate the limited supply for the specific steel sections they required, some redesigning had to be done. Working closely with the structural engineers they redesigned certain elements to still be structurally sound but make use of the limited sections South Africa’s steel suppliers could provide after Covid 19 disruptions.

Despite the many challenges, and a testament to their collaborative and hardworking nature, the project was completed ahead of schedule.

Although RSB Contracts faced challenges and uncertainty, they found the project quite exciting. As Richard Spencer says, “Projects of this size aren’t plentiful, so being involved with it was great. To deliver a project of this magnitude, with these hurdles, in such a tight timeframe, makes us very proud. And to win an award for it – Priceless!”
