Offering a complete roofing solution, Builders’ Durban truss plant supplied more than 8 000m² of roofing materials for the new high school complex in Ndumo, despite its remote location.

Roofing a new high school in a remote part of KwaZulu-Natal could easily be a logistical nightmare, but Builders ensured that the construction progressed smoothly and got the job done through one of its 14 truss plants across the country.

The new R186-million high school with boarding facilities was designed by Harber & Associates to be constructed in the rural community of Ndumo, which is situated close to the Ndumo Game Reserve, 400km from Durban, the closest major city. The roofing requirement comprised 26 individual buildings of various sizes, with a total surface area of more than 8 000m², the equivalent of a rugby field, and a value of R3 million.

NMC Construction Group’s contracts manager, Solly Rens, explained why Builders was a good fit for this remote, large-scale project. “We used the Durban truss plant for the entire roofing process, from design to manufacture. Their specialists guided us through the final designs and the materials they would be using, taking into account the needs of the school and Ndumo’s hot and humid climate. And they delivered all the materials efficiently, which was impressive considering the time constraints,” he says.

Currently in the final phase of construction, the school is due for completion in May 2016.

What is a Builders truss plant?
According to Builders’ national manufacturing manager, Sean Lambert, it’s an all-in-one roofing solution for any project, big or small. While an architect will design the look of the roof, Builders has a team of roof designers who takes responsibility for the roof’s structural integrity and makes sure it adheres to all national building regulations.

Using market-leading software from MiTek Industries SA, complex designs are possible in nail-plated timber or lightweight steel, and once the plans have been signed off, the roof goes into production. The turnaround time for the manufacture and delivery of trusses is between 10 and 14 days.

Why the decision to focus on roofing?
“Builders has been involved in roofing manufacture since it acquired Federated Timbers in 2005. The current industry is not very organised and there are lots of fly-by-night manufactures and installers. We saw an opportunity to do it properly,” explains Lambert.

“We don’t just offer trusses, we offer the complete package to spare contractors having to deal with multiple suppliers. Our service includes engineering support, site measurement and on-site assistance, all fixings and brackets, underlays, boarding, waterproofing materials, fascia- and bargeboards and a range of coverings. We also strive for a fast turnaround because we know that some contractors don’t plan ahead, and they are always looking for the roof to be finished yesterday,” he adds.

How will this service save time and money?
“Because we supply the full basket from bricks to roof, we have buying power in the industry. Coupled with our in-house design service, this allows us to deliver a competitive quote. There is also quality control across the board, from materials to the finished product, which means that the roof won’t end up costing more to amend or repair down the line,” Lambert concludes.
