The speedy erection of MiTek’s Ultra-Span® light gauge steel roof structure on one of TUT’s campuses led to the commissioning of another, similar installation.
The speedy erection of the Ultra-Span® light gauge steel roof structure over the nutrition hall at the Ga-Rankuwa campus of the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) resulted in the commissioning of another, similar installation at the Moses Kotane Primary School, signifying a thumbs up for the project team.
When the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) called for the roof installation at the Ga-Rankuwa campus, the governing criteria of the brief were focused on cost, programme and competency for performance. On top of that, the principal contractor, Enza Construction, preferred working with only one subcontractor. Following a vendor selection process, Hi-Tech Nail Plate was appointed as a preferred supplier by Enza Construction.
Hi-Tech Nail Plate assumed responsibility for numerous timber roof structures as well as the roof structure for the nutrition hall with 30m clear spans, which was originally designed and specified as conventional hot-rolled structural steel.
Changing the specs
After carefully reviewing the costs and time constraints of the project, Hi-Tech Nail Plate suggested that the Ultra-Span® light gauge steel truss system may be a better option than conventional steel.
Not only was it quicker to install, but another factor that counted in its favour was the simplification of the supporting structure – no ring beams or columns were required, based on truss spacing, and the building would be constructed from load-bearing brickwork only.
The rest of the team agreed on the Ultra-Span® light gauge steel truss system and MiTek’s expertise was called upon for the design of the trusses in view of the large span of the roof: 30m clear span, plus 1m cantilever on both eaves. The roof was covered with metal sheeting.
Light gauge steel a sensible choice
The trusses were pre-manufactured in Hi-Tech Nail Plate’s factory – made in two halves to allow easy transportation. On site, the truss halves were joined together with box frames to form the full-span truss.
The complete roof truss structure was lifted onto the supporting brickwork of the structure with a crane in one day. Done in the morning, the purlins and bracing were fitted thereafter.
Success leads to project win
The project team experienced no material challenges and the site ran smoothly during the installation. Both the GDE and Enza Construction were extremely satisfied with the workmanship and overall result, and were specifically impressed with the speed at which the roof was erected. This is why the GDE commissioned a similar installation at the Moses Kotane Primary School in Soweto, which was also successfully completed.
