Robust, modern and minimalistic floors at the Sasol Recreation Club in Secunda

The Sasol Recreation Club in Secunda recently transformed its large conference area into a high-end environment that provides guests and delegates with a visually impressive, clean and contemporary space in which to talk, work and present. Flowcrete Africa developed a one-of-a-kind coating for the interior pillars and provided a luxury floor finish for the project.

The client required the flooring materials to maintain their aesthetics when faced with the busy daily activities on the site. The decorative system had to withstand frequent cleaning, heavy foot traffic, as well as the scuffs and scrapes that are inherent to a busy conference facility.

Sasol Recreation Club’s new interior design scheme is predominantly bright white with touches of black, which is illustrated by the white walls, ceiling tiles and floor, and is punctuated by ornate black chandeliers and black furniture. The flooring solution chosen was 1000m² of the seamless epoxy terrazzo system, Mondéco Earth, applied in a crisp white Snow colour. The product suits the modern, minimalist appearance of the club thanks to its white backdrop with black aggregates sprinkled throughout to dapple the floor area with small dark dots. The same specification was applied in the venue’s canteen area, where it needs to handle spillages of hot food and drink, potentially corrosive acids and sugars as well as wheeled catering equipment.

The robust, seamless, level and impervious nature of resin terrazzo systems means that the floor can quickly and easily be cleaned, and will last for many years to come.

Flowcrete Africa’s Peran STB system was used in a highly unique manner at the Sasol Recreation Club. The decorative epoxy coating, which is made of colour stable quartz granules sealed within a clear resin binder, was installed as coved skirting and was even vertically applied onto the building’s pillars.

The pillars were coated in a Sandstone colour, which complements the floor while providing a pleasant visual contrast to the surrounding black and white tones. The practical advantage is that it also avoids unwanted substances becoming stuck in the gap between the wall and the floor.
