Terraforce recently installed a retaining wall at the Oasis Retirement Centre in Century City, Cape Town.
Terraforce recently installed a retaining wall at the Oasis Retirement Centre in Cape Town’s Century City Development, a 250-hectare mixed-use development that combines office, retail, residential and leisure components in an integrated, stimulating and aesthetically pleasing urban environment. Construction was completed in December 2012.
Terraforce’s long, wavy sound barrier along Ratanga Road was installed with the intention of shielding residents of the centre from excessive noise and prying eyes. The steep wall was designed with three curving terraces that reduce the overall footprint of the 500m earth berm and to improve overall noise absorption.
The wall was installed by the Terraforce-approved contractor, Decorton Retaining Systems, and consists of approximately 8 000 Terraforce L12 Rock Face blocks with a concrete foundation for each terrace. A subsoil drainage system is located behind the bottom row of blocks, while the earth backfill is reinforced with Polytex 115 geo-fabric every third row of blocks. The three meandering terrace walls each reaches a maximum height of 1,8m to create terraces of varying width.
The retaining wall is almost completely covered by indigenous plants that are also effective in preventing wind erosion on the gently sloping embankments that face the buildings. An extension of 13 000 blocks has been approved based on the success of the project and the fact that the development keeps growing.
Terraforce believes strongly that a successful product is one that gets used more than once, and is one that satisfies the expectation of the client.
