Over 200 industry experts attended the DAS Conference held in Johannesburg on 19 March 2019, which was hosted by Media in Africa. The theme of this region’s event was, The Power of Architecture & Design: Conversation on the creative process, Materiality, Cities & Building Design.
Marlene van Rooyen, Editor in Chief at Media in Africa welcomed everyone and introduced them to the day’s events. After the event, Marlene enthused, “Our DAS JHB CPD event was literally a sell-out success. Our attendees were in praise of the quality of the event and our sponsors were very happy with the calibre of professionals.”
Brief insights on the speaker topics for the day
Rudolf Bitzer from Kaye & Kaye Architectural Consultants stated architecture is about seeing the patterns in things and then giving form to it.”
Dorothy van’t Riet from Dorothy van’t Riet Design & Décor Consultants spoke on Brain Research and how this influences our interior spaces. “Interior design has become more about human experience,” she says.
Everyday I am . . . .ing: Thinking, Designing, Making, Living & Surviving. This was the topic of Braam de Villiers from Earthworld Architects.
Lloyd Makanza from Trellidor made it very clear how critical it is to protect our homes with proper security.
In turn, Corne White from Marley discussed their fire rated ceilings and walls, as well as their structural steel protection.
Dalena Beyers from New Urban identified and discussed 10 urbanist ideas.
The Artist, Martyn Schickerling explored the relationship between art, architecture & design. “The relationship between art, design and architecture has deep roots,” says Martyn Schickerling.
BIM is about collaboration and about working together. BIM works if everyone participates,” says Gerd Bolt from Bolt Architects.
Lyle Jeffrey from Rigifoam touched on how concrete roof design is very popular.
Caron Schnaid from GAPP Architects discussed BRITAM Tower, Skyscraper of the year in Africa. “BRITAM Tower is the second tallest building in Africa,” she enthuses.
Allison Groves from WSP spoke on building sustainable and resilient cities.
Nicky Pringle gave a brief presentation on Floorworx and what they have to offer the industry.
“The greatest innovation in the making of the unconventional unitised Jewel Façade is the integration of design, analysis and automation of fabrication information in a parametric environment, says Matilde Tellier from ARUP.
Tafadzwa Nyanzunda from the Department of Trade and Industry, emphasised the crucial role that timber plays in the building industry.
I have to begin by saying that I truly found value in the DAS Conference. It is such a fun conference! Once again thank-you and the rest of the talks that were new were of a very high standard.
I drove all the way from Bloemfontein for this event and it far exceeded my expectations! Thank you for a great conference!
