a.b.e. Construction Chemicals, now in its 91st year of operations, was tasked with the protection of the lagoon at Balwin Properties’ R9-billion Munyaka Estate in Waterfall City, Midrand. a.b.e. provided a variety of its specialised construction products for this project.
Project specs
The award-winning project will feature 5 020 apartments surrounding a crystal lagoon. Powered by sustainable technology patented in over 190 countries, the Munyaka Crystal Lagoon amenity will also feature a 50m-high arched tower with a restaurant, conference facility, heated pool fed by the lagoon and ziplines from the tower into the lagoon. At the equivalent size of seven rugby fields, it is the largest man-made lagoon in the Southern Hemisphere.
VIP products
Warren Trew, a.b.e.’s regional manager for a.b.e. GCN Inland, says to provide the high-build, durable, elastomeric coating which was required for the beach areas and retaining walls of the lagoon at Munyaka, two VIP products were supplied:
- VIP QuickPrime Epoxy SF 2K primer ensured proper adhesion of the VIP QuickSpray Supreme AL coating which followed.
- VIP QuickSpray Supreme AL contains a special aliphatic colour-fast material to protect the white colouring against potential discolouration by the Highveld’s fierce ultraviolet (UV) rays.
Expert application
Akhanani Services, a.b.e.’s approved polyurea applicator, was contracted to handle the application of the two products. “Their stringent work effort, quality control and attention to detail ensured that the project was successful, on time and approved by the international VIP quality control team,” Trew says.
Additional products
Products were also supplied by a.b.e. for waterproofing around the external wall of the lagoon prior to backfilling, to fill indentations and blow holes exposed on the concrete surface, for sealing of the concrete-floored beaches and walls, for crack repairs to the beach floor areas and a grouting compound for grouting of the inlet filter boxes.
