Mapei’s status in the building industry was vividly displayed by its award-winning 800m² stand at the international Cersaie 2013 Ceramics Exhibition held in Bologna, Italy, during September.

With a proud 76-year history, Mapei is today a world leader in the production of adhesives, chemical products and solutions for building, from facilities operating in over 31 countries on five continents.

The key pillars of the company’s success have been its investment in research to drive innovation, the development of a comprehensive product range that provides solutions for virtually all building needs and the focus on producing eco-sustainable products that are certified by leading environmental authorities around the world. Supporting these attributes has been the company’s continual expansion of its global production and laboratory footprint to achieve optimum cost-effective proximity to local markets.

Mapei’s status in the building industry was vividly displayed by its award-winning 800m² stand at the international Cersaie 2013 Ceramics Exhibition held in Bologna, Italy, during September.

While displaying the company’s international leadership in adhesives, the multimedia and multi-sensorial exhibition stand enabled visitors to appreciate Mapei’s complete range of products and solutions, developed to meet all the requirements of professionals from the building industry. The solutions covered industrial, commercial and residential applications, from the smallest DIY jobs to the needs of major project sites.

When it comes to major projects, Mapei’s track-record includes involvement in some of the biggest projects, including the current doubling of capacity of the 81km-long Panama Canal. The company has been supplying admixtures for both the mass and marine concrete work on what is one the largest construction sites in the world. Mapei’s research laboratories developed a new generation of admixture technology to suit the specially designed 5,5-million cubic metres of concrete being used for the project. Other major projects that employed Mapei’s technical expertise include the breathtaking Three Gorges Dam on China’s Yangstze River and London’s ingenious Olympic Stadium.

Attendees at the Cersaie Exhibition from the international Mapei Group included representatives from local subsidiary Mapei South Africa which, for the last five years, has been introducing the South African construction industry to the benefits of the advanced building technology additives, sealants, adhesives and concrete performance chemicals that are available from the parent Mapei Group. Building lines that have been launched locally include waterproofing, sealants, flooring, concrete repair and structural strengthening, while other product lines cover admixtures for concrete, materials for underground construction and cement grinding additives.

Mapei technology is currently being used for two prestigious office developments: one in Cape Town and the other in Sandton, Gauteng. The 32-storey Portside Building in Cape Town is destined to be the Mother City’s tallest building and South Africa’s first Green Star-rated skyscraper. Mapei is providing close technical service support and is ensuring that the unequalled technical resources of the international group are available to develop the most effective solutions to construction challenges. The architecturally advanced 102 Rivonia in Sandton used Mapei’s green technology to reduce the carbon footprint of the building.

A fundamental philosophy at Mapei that permeates its design, production, laboratory and on-site development work, is to minimise the impact of the company’s products and activities on the environment. It shows in concern for the health of installers and final users throughout the lifecycle of products, including recycling, while also designing for durability as a key issue in sustainability.

The successful approach helps designers to create innovative projects that are awarded high ratings by environmental agencies such as LEED and Green Star. Mapei South Africa is a member of the Green Building Council of South Africa in support of the drive to ensure that all local buildings are designed, built and operated in an environmentally sustainable way.
