Established in Durban in 1932, a.b.e. Construction Chemicals started operations in 1939 as a supplier of bitumen to municipalities in KwaZulu-Natal, but it has since grown in both size and diversity to become a major supplier of specialised construction products to the building, civil engineering and building maintenance industries with eight branches nationally and manufacturing plants in Gauteng (Boksburg) and Durban (Isipingo).

a.b.e. is part of the Chryso Southern Africa group, and enjoys successful integration and strong co-operation of all departments and divisions. With a network of branches and distributors throughout South Africa, sub-Saharan Africa, the Indian Ocean Islands and Pakistan, a.b.e. is ideally positioned to service its customers.

The a.b.e. sales programme falls into the broad categories of waterproofing, flooring, specialised adhesives, silicone and sealants, concrete repair products and general construction products.

Supported by a highly competent technical advisory service, the a.b.e. sales programme provides an impressive array of flooring products, including surface hardeners, floor repair systems, floor coatings, screeds and toppings, self-levelling flooring systems, for both industrial and commercial applications, as well as some for the DIY market.

The following is a brief look at the products and systems a.b.e produces for the flooring industry:

For screeding applications, there is a wide selection of products including abescreed SLCP – a single-component, quick-hardening, pumpable self-levelling screed suitable for fast-track applications; abeflo ECC – a three-component, epoxy-modified, cementitious, self-smoothing screed; abeprime GCP – a twin-pack waterborne epoxy; and abeprime SL – a solvent-free epoxy and levelling primer.

In floor finishes and toppings a.b.e. also excels with abeflo (2 & 3) – a four-component, solvent-free epoxy self-levelling flooring system; abeflo HPU – a three-component, polyurethane self-levelling chemical resistance mortar; heavy-duty floor toppings with abescreed – a highly popular four-component, solvent-free epoxy mortar flooring system; and abescreed PU – a three-component polyurethane mortar; and abescreed QC – a decorative, solvent-free epoxy build-up system with natural or coloured quartz aggregates.

abeco mastic – a cold-laid bituminous, heavy-duty mastic flooring system consisting of stone chippings, cement and a binder; abetop – an industrial floor topping that provides extra-heavy-duty protection against abrasion and impact; and abedur – a blend of very had, natural aggregates, free from metallic material, used to produce a granothlithic-type floor when blended with ordinary Portland cement – complete the flooring materials on offer. Two more floor finishes include the safedeck system with 60 and/or 100 grit to yield a non-slip surface and abecote PUD as a sealing and maintenance coat with excellent mark resistance.
