Sustainability

With sustainability becoming increasingly important in South Africa’s built environment, Plascon is proud to lead with responsible innovation and environmentally conscious practices.

The company is compliant with green processes, with certifications in place at its South African manufacturing plants since 2005. These include ISO9001 (Quality Management Systems), ISO45001 (Occupational Health & Safety) and ISO14001 (Environmental Management Systems).

These internationally recognised standards reflect the company’s commitment to minimising the environmental impact and improving efficiency.

filling hall

Plascon’s filling hall robotics has increased production while lowering its carbon footprint.

Smart and sustainable manufacturing

Plascon’s pioneering in-line dispersion technology, the first of its kind in Africa, processes paint three times faster than conventional methods, thereby reducing energy use and waste.

The company has also introduced robotics to its filling lines, significantly increasing production while lowering its carbon footprint.

Furthermore, Plascon has removed lead-based components and chromium (VI) pigments from its paint formulations. Since 1999, the company has also steadily reduced the use of glycols, solvents and titanium dioxide, reducing harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Many of its premium water-based paints are VOC-free, ensuring a safer option for indoor environments.

Recycle

An on-site water treatment plant provides recycled water for Plascon’s production plants.

Eco-friendly products

Plascon proudly supports the Green Building Council of South Africa’s (GBCSA’s) Green Star rating system, offering products that contribute to healthier buildings:

  • Professional Hygiene™ Low Sheen: Features BIODEFENCE™ silver technology, killing up to 99,9% of bacteria like E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus within six hours.
  • Double Velvet Pure: An air-purifying wall coating that removes harmful indoor pollutants and resists stains.
  • TradePro Roof and More: A high-quality acrylic coating free of alkyl phenyl ethoxylates, ensuring safety for aquatic life and people.

Beyond the paint

The company’s environmental focus extends to water conservation and packaging – with upgraded water management systems across its plants and, more recently, using recycled water via an on-site treatment plant.

Additionally, Plascon’s packaging uses up to 75% recycled content, helping to reduce landfill waste.

Plascon remains committed to creating a more sustainable future – one product, process and partnership at a time.

Plascon’s processes, production and products aspire to deliver more sustainable solutions for the built environment.
