Paint contributes to green ratings

With the building industry striving towards attaining sustainability in new building projects, greener options exist at every stage of property development, from the architecture and design, to building materials, finishes, water and energy consumption – both during construction and after completion.
According to Carol Ras, who heads up the Plascon Professional category, Plascon has embraced the green theme as a core business objective and has eliminated lead reduced volatile organic compounds (VOC) and solvents from all its decorative coatings.

“We adhere strictly to the building certification requirements outlined by the Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA) in manufacturing all our products. The net effect is that Green Star ratings are maximised for buildings created by property developers who use our paints and coatings,” she says.

Plascon is also guided by the principles of the 1987 Brundtland Commission, which prioritised “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”.

More washable paint
“Further earth-friendly features in Plascon’s Kitchens & Bathrooms include the fact that this paint is ten times more washable than conventional water-based paints. This means less repainting over time, which translates into less natural resources being used as well as cost savings. The lead-free formulation of Plascon’s entire decorative range is kinder to humans and to the planet.

Cool roof paint
“A real win for the planet is Plascon Nuroof Cool – roof paint that cools interiors by up to 8°C because it contains the Enviroshield™ formulation with an ultraviolet (UV) protector that reflects the sun’s rays by at least 30%. A lower roof temperature means longer-lasting colour, and less electricity-consuming air-conditioning is needed to cool the interior. Nuroof Cool protects against harsh weather and environmental pollutants, leading to decreased emissions of greenhouse gases.

Longer-lasting paint
“The Velvaglo non-drip, water-based enamel for furniture, doors and wall surfaces contains Aquatough™, a unique acrylic hybrid that gives greater UV resistance, flexibility and durability, leading to less repainting over time. With low odour and low VOC, this product is not harmful.”
