In an environment where high foot traffic is continuous and wheeled pallets are a common occurrence, resilient flooring is of utmost importance. Therefore when the newly built Oxford Fresh Market in Durban was ready to install their flooring the requirement for a long-lasting, high-performance flooring system was a top priority.
Not only did they require a hardwearing floor but also an attractive one that enhances the look and feel of this top-class establishment.
Oxford Fresh Market is an independently owned supermarket that will have opened its doors to the public on 17th May. This first-class supermarket is offering the best in fresh produce and grocery items and therefore required flooring of the highest standard.
Flowcrete SA approached Oxford Fresh Market with one of their most popular selling floors in the supermarket and retail environments, Peran STB. Flowcrete’s Peran STB flooring system offers both the quality and finish that a busy retail environment requires.
This particular flooring system is impact-resistant to cater for the heavy-duty storage shelving and wheeled pallets, and is also abrasion-resistant. As a supermarket exposed to hundreds of shoppers daily the floor had to have excellent wear resistance as well as being aesthetically appealing underfoot.
“The look of the floor is just as important as the technical properties,” says Ian Harrison, Flowcrete SA’s managing director. “Therefore we were happy to design a new colour exclusively for Oxford’s new store to enable the floor finish to be in line with the supermarket’s branding.”
Although Peran STB was installed throughout the 3 000m² shopfloor area there was a need for a more heavy-duty flooring system in the back-of-house areas. These areas including the butchery, deli and bakery are exposed to extreme temperatures, from the freezers right the way through to the hot ovens.
Hygiene is very important in these areas and had to be taken into account when specifying the floor. Therefore Flowcrete SA’s Flowfresh range was chosen due to the added benefit of Polygiene, an antimicrobial additive that destroys bacteria on the surface of the floor.
Compliance with stringent hygiene specifications means that the floor surface must be able to be cleaned in accordance with health and safety regulations and must not harbour dirt.
These polyurethane resin floor screeds deliver the ultimate in performance hygiene flooring and are the perfect solution to maintaining a high health and safety standard.
“The floors are beautiful,” said Paul Latimer, co-owner and managing director of Oxford Fresh Market. “The end result is exactly what we were hoping for.”
