The second CPD Architecture Seminar of 2015 was another great success, providing architects with a great opportunity for learning and networking.

Architects, designers and students from in and around Gauteng were treated to insightful presentations around the topic “Sustainability: The building and beyond”, as well as face-to-face networking with product suppliers at the CPD Architecture Seminar on 9 October, hosted by FLOORS and WALLS & ROOFS magazines in conjunction with the South African Institute of Architects (SAIA).

What did you miss?
Marloes Reinink from Solid Green Consulting gave an update on the Interior Rating Tool and introduced the Living Building Challenge, a rigorous performance standard that calls for the creation of building projects that operate as cleanly and efficiently as nature’s architecture.

Her colleague, Warren Gray, spoke about the proposed changes to SANS 10400 XA and EDGE certifications. He also demonstrated Sefaira performance-based design software that provides real-time feedback while drawing, saving on building simulation time.

“Are you speaking visual?” Trend forecaster Dave Nemeth presented his trend report on behalf of FloorworX, during which he spoke about the crucial role of design, the changing role of the architect, disruptive trends as well as fresh and innovative approaches for sustainable business.

Marley Building Systems’ Isaac Simelane gave an update on building systems, including their newly acquired Etex materials.

Addressing sustainable roofing, Lyle Jeffrey talked about advancements in solar reflectance technology and high-performance systems over the last few years, while his colleague, Rolinda Swart, discussed efficient roof insulation and assembly.

Neil Sterley from Dekton presented this 78-year-old company’s brands of ultra-compact surfaces for wall facades, ventilated rain screens and curtain walls.

To conclude the day, Emile Venter from Flowcrete explained how to specify seamless resin terrazzo.
