Multi-sport facility

multi-sport facility

Nike’s multi-sport facility that just does it – The rebranded Nike Football Training Centre in Soweto received an extensive revamp to become Nike Shapa Soweto.

Collaborating alongside Nike SA and Johannesburg based Futura Design Agency, C76 Architects reveals how the centre continues to ignite the national soccer scene, and it is evolving into an innovative multi-sport facility and vibrant local community hub.

The multi-sport courtyard lies within the custom roofing element and features a bespoke pattern.

Beyond sports

As part of Nike’s ongoing social investment and commitment to the community of Soweto, the centre aims to be self-sustainable and robust. It is built with materials selected purposefully for the project’s longevity and overall future lifespan.

Following comprehensive community research, the renovated design attracts engagement beyond sports. It has been designed with and for Soweto.

Vinyl flooring graces the adaptable dance and boxing studios upstairs.

Community-focussed

The renovation added a new “social yard”. Shapa Soweto boasts a professionally designed skate park, basketball courts, five-a-side soccer fields, athletics oval and a cross-country running track surrounding the centre.

Attractive, open thresholds connect the centre with, and reaches into the community, both visibly and physically. The wheelchair-friendly and secure multi-sport yard welcomes social activation and encourages economic and entrepreneurial participation through food kiosks selling healthy produce grown in the facility’s gardens.

A professionally designed skate park gives the community a gathering point in a safe environment.

Modular facilities

The visual language and architectural graphics flow into the building, with modular facilities added throughout. The ground floor adds flexible, multivalent recreational and event spaces.

Public leisure and workspaces are joined with classrooms, a new maker’s space and a studio fitted with the latest tech to encourage creativity and foster exploration. Upstairs, adaptable dance and boxing studios join the administration and office level.

A professional athletics oval surrounds the centre, with rubber-crumb sports flooring.

Bringing together the collective notions of sport and community through architecture and design, C76 in conjunction with Nike SA & Futura Design Agency celebrates the proud energies of Soweto and its people. The centre is not just for aspiring sport stars, it is also a social haven accessible to all.
