Exxaro’s new head office in Centurion is 18 000m² in size and accommodates 650 employees. Designed by AMA Architects, the signature of the office building flows with a series of layered fluid-curvaceous forms, in flushed-glazed detail. Its welcoming triple-volume entrance and reception open into a spacious atrium that sores upwards through the core of the five-storey workspace.
Custom designed to support Exxaro’s business goals, ethos, values and vision, the building’s five storeys of offices will sit atop four storeys of structured basement parking, creating a powerful scale for this new landmark.
Overall, the building is expected to consume 76% less water than national best practice and eliminate energy waste.
Green measures include zoned lighting, energy-efficient building services and systems, water-efficient fixtures, rainwater harvesting for use in toilets and landscape irrigation, water-wise landscaping, and low volatile organic compound (VOC) interior finishes to ensure a high level of indoor air quality. It also has a five-star Green Star SA rating from the Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA).
Clever facade and roof designs
While its performance-glazed facade will let in generous natural light, its clever design also shields actual sun penetration into the building, helping to keep its interior refreshingly cool while offering inspiring outdoor views.
Eliminating heat transfer from the concrete roof was essential due to the large surface area. Lambdaboard was used as surface bed insulation, and with its unrivalled thermal credentials heat transfer was negated. This allowed designers to achieve the required R-value and this was a key factor in achieving the five-star Green Star rating.
The fact that Lambdaboard is eco-friendly and has zero ozone-depletion potential, is also contributing to the Green Star rating. Lambdaboard is the silent energy saver, and once installed, it will continue to work tirelessly in helping to reduce the carbon footprint.
