We welcome a new member to the Media in Africa Group with the appointment of Tracey Swart as our journalist. She has written extensively on flooring, wall coverings, projects and décor trends. Tracey has a great interest in construction and design; and has muddied her safety shoes on many construction site visits. We sat down with her to learn more.

Q: How long have you been writing?

A: Since I was first able to write, it is one of my passions. I used to write small story books for my family as a child. Although my career has largely been in marketing, I always seem to find my way to writing a newsletter, blogs or articles until it became my full-time occupation.

Q: What was your first experience of the construction industry?

A: As a student, I worked temporarily as a project assistant on a construction site, compiling snag lists and tracking the progress of finishes being installed at a housing development. Fast forward some years to the purchase of our home, when my husband and I did some extensive renovations which taught me a great deal and showed me how much I didn’t know.

Q: How would you describe your personal décor style?

A: Not quite biophilic, but the colours and textures that I’m drawn to are generally nature-inspired. There is plenty of wood and lots of colour. I don’t have a single white wall in my house!

Three fun facts about Tracey:

  • An avid reader of murder mystery novels and hopes to one day write her own “whodunnit”.
  • Types very vigorously (apparently) and has killed more than a few keyboards (allegedly).
  • A keen 4×4 camper who loves to take the road less travelled, or dry riverbed for that matter.
  • Words are her friends, numbers are not.
