A mineral ceiling made by Armstrong Ceilings that won Cradle-to-Cradle certification about six months ago, has now been accredited with silver status for its Perla OP 0.95 tile.

Cradle-to-Cradle products are assessed on five criteria covering material health, material re-use, renewable energy and carbon management, water stewardship and social responsibility. There are four categories of certification ranging from the most basic one to the top-of-the-line platinum status.

Armstrong’s Perla tile contains 53% recycled material and the tile itself is also 100% recyclable. In addition to holding the silver status, it performs acoustically to Sound Absorption Class A standards, is highly light-reflective to a level of 85% and is available in Board, Tegular, Microlock and SL2 edges.

Armstrong’s senior segment manager for sustainability (Europe, Africa and Middle East), Jeremy Sumeray, says the Cradle-to-Cradle certification differs from other sustainability certifications as the process of assessment starts before the product is even manufactured.

Products are developed specifically for closed-loop systems in which every ingredient used in its production is not only safe, but beneficial for the users. It must be capable of biodegrading naturally and restoring the soil in the process, or must be capable of being recycled into high-quality materials for subsequent products.

The products must be able to be recycled again and again without showing signs of degradation.

Armstrong says this programme was developed to meet growing consumer demand for sustainable products. Cradle-to-Cradle certification is now a requirement for many building projects in America and parts of Europe.

The certification process is designed to give specifiers and clients a transparent mechanism to compare the sustainability and performance of competing products.

As part of its own Cradle-to-Cradle commitment, Armstrong says it is proud to now be a part of the Pavilions at Park 2020, a Cradle-to-Cradle working environment that uses only products that meet these stringent certification criteria.

Park 2020 is built alongside Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam and includes the Experience Centre, which is used to showcase the Cradle-to-Cradle products and materials.

Sumeray says: “To maintain involvement in the Cradle-to-Cradle programme, we must demonstrate continued progress towards achieving our ultimate goals. Winning a silver accreditation shows that we are well on the way to achieve that.”
