Menlyn Park Shopping Centre in Pretoria is an award-winning super-regional shopping centre. After undergoing a R2.5 billion redevelopment, Menlyn Park set a new standard by becoming the biggest mall in Africa.
The mall, which houses a variety of international brands across multiple levels, is opening a new gym and BKV Holdings was contracted to refurbish the existing floor. Their primary challenge in ensuring a 100% level floor, considering a substantial 2 500m² had to be refurbished, was the limited time of only one week. Understanding the importance of a quality underlayment in order to achieve a smooth flooring finish, the company specified Sika’s self-levelling screed, Sikafloor*-200 Level.
The existing tiles were lifted and the remaining tile adhesive layer was mechanically removed. After the floor was cleaned and primed, Sikafloor-200 Level was applied as a self-levelling screed for the underlayment of the final floor. Up to 900 bags of the product were required to get an even 10mm screed layer across the floor. After four hours, the floor was ready for covering with a combination of rubber mats and tiles, chosen specifically for the gym environment.
Overcoming real challenges
Towards the end of the application, another significant challenge arose when a burst water pipe sprayed water over the newly laid screed. To the product’s credit, there was no damage at all.
