From a small factory in Koedoespoort on the eastern outskirts of Pretoria, a magnificent selection of decorative tiles is being manufactured at Studio Del Mei using sophisticated machinery to provide top-quality products aimed at enhancing any wall or floor tiling installation.

The company draws on its rich African heritage and the classical fine art training of its designers to produce an extensive range of borders for floor and wall tiles that vary from the exotic to the contemporary, that are typically found in so many European and Mediterranean regions.

According to Rita Papadopoulos, Director at Studio Del Mei, the company’s dedication and commitment to style and manufacturing excellence has contributed to its success over the years and, having opened its factory in 1986, Studio Del Mei is today one of the oldest and largest manufacturers of high-quality wall and floor decorative tiles for domestic and commercial applications in South Africa.

“We really pride ourselves on the products we produce and the service we give to our customers,” say Studio Del Mei. “It is this passion and dedication that have contributed to our success over the years.”

The company’s range of tiles is broken down into decorative tiles that are made in squares of 100mm x 100mm, in rectangles of 200mm x 80mm, or the slightly smaller size of 200mm x 60mm.

There are four different decorative borders, namely:
• Knysna, with a floral pattern.
• Serene, with a classical pattern.
• Terme Beige, that uses classical motifs.
• Wendelin, an African style.

All these tiles are available either as singles (in squares) or as a Listello, where the design or part of the design is replicated in a continuous flow.

There is also a complete Orca panel of 600mm x 250mm depicting a fantasy painting of a scene from the sea, while its Listello companion style uses replicated and continuous waves for its design.

The Mosaic gloss range comprises 24 standard colours made in a uniform size of 100mm x 100mm and 5,5mm thick. However, there is an enormous selection of designs in the mosaic range that are made on request with different finishes that include structured gloss, matt, structured matt, Granito and metallic.

All Studio Del Mei tiles comply with the minimum requirements for glazing, matt, abrasion, water and stain resistance, to provide a sustainable tiling solution in what is an extremely price-sensitive market.

“We offer a specialised design style that is equal to anything produced elsewhere in the world, and our manufacturing processes meet the stringent standards and quality applied in the sophisticated European markets,” says Studio Del Mei.

The company has a comprehensive permanent display housed at its showroom in Koedoespoort, and offers a design service to architects and interior designers. Most of Studio Del Mei’s tiles are made to order, which ensures colour consistency during the manufacturing and firing.
