Six local winners were honoured and Abbeycon (Pty) Ltd was named as local Grand Prix winner for their work on the Cradlestone Mall project.

The local winners of the Saint-Gobain Gypsum International Trophy Competition were announced by the global interior building solutions group Saint-Gobain Gyproc, coinciding with the company’s celebration of 85 years of operations in South Africa. Abbeycon (Pty) Ltd walked away with top honours as the overall Grand Prix winner for their work on the Cradlestone Mall project.

The Gypsum Division of Saint-Gobain sponsors the competition, which is currently in its ninth season, after being established in 1998 to identify, recognise and promote world-class skills in drywall technology and plastering.

It is one of the largest international competitions of its kind seen to promote excellence and innovation in the use of sustainable, lightweight plasterboard systems and plasters, with the main objective of the initiative being to reward contractors who make a valuable contribution to innovation within the industry.

Saint-Gobain subsidiaries in 37 countries across the globe will seek out the world’s newest, most interesting and innovative construction projects to enter into this year’s International Trophy Competition. Over 100 projects that vary in size and type are expected to be judged in six categories, including plasterboard, plasterer solutions, innovation, segment solutions used in either education, hospitals or hotels, residential and mixed use in commercial leisure and retail developments.

Evan Lockhart-Barker, general manager for marketing at Saint-Gobain Gyproc SA, announced the South African winners in each of the six categories:

“The judges made specific mention of the very high level of entries received this year, and I commend and congratulate all winners. You are the shining stars in our industry, and Saint-Gobain Gyproc is proud to be associated with you and offer you the platform for your work to be recognised internationally through this competition,” said Evan.

“Thank you for making a difference through the excellence and innovation demonstrated in your projects. I wish Abbeycon (Pty) Ltd, the ceiling and partitioning contractors who were responsible for the Cradlestone Mall development, every success for the final results of the ninth Saint-Gobain Gypsum International Trophy Competition, which will be announced at the awards ceremony in Berlin in June 2014,” he added.
