Lightweight roofing solution for shopping centre

Lightweight roofing

A new shopping centre in Milnerton, Cape Town, is both light-filled and dry with polycarbonate sheeting.

Nestled in Sunningdale, on Wood Drive, the Woodlands Lifestyle Centre offers a well-lit space that is protected from the Cape’s infamous weather.

The roof sheeting was supplied by Duroplastic, a leading manufacturer and distributor of fibreglass and polycarbonate sheeting, catering for the needs of the retail and construction industries.

Project brief

This project started in the initial design phase. The brief from the client and professional specifying team was for a lightweight solution for the canopy and walkway roofing, which still allowed natural lighting through.

16mm polycarbonate Clickfix sheeting was used on the roofing.

With anchor tenant requirements and a large double-volume restaurant area as part of the brief, Marlon Multiwall sheeting options in both 10mm and 16mm were selected.

This remarkable insulating glazing material is manufactured from damage-resistant polycarbonate with added co-extruded, long-life protection against ultraviolet (UV) weathering.

Product selection

Multiwall polycarbonate sheets are incredibly versatile, rigid yet light in weight. It is insulating and has options for maximising daylight, diffusing daylight, controlling solar heat gain and controlling condensation.

The covered walkways protecting the shopfronts of the shopping centre were clad in 10mm Multiwall.

Allowing natural light into the space ensures energy savings for the centre, with UV protection for patrons. Multiwall has excellent impact and fire resistance, ideal for a commercial space.

The product is available in a range of thicknesses and configurations for roofing, cladding and glazing uses.

Installation

The 16mm polycarbonate Clickloc sheeting was used on the roofing and for the vertical facade cladding areas at the restaurant. It allows for a well-lit atmosphere, while protecting the patrons and clients from inclement weather.

The lightweight solution for the canopy and walkway roofing is half the weight of plate glass with high-impact resistance.

The covered walkways protecting the shopfronts of the shopping centre were clad in 10mm Multiwall. This is an elegant yet practical thermal barrier, and a roofing solution for both the professional team and client.

Sheeting with commercial glazing bars was specified for areas where over-purlin application was necessary.
