Apartment building in Pretoria gets playground with safe, slip-resistant surface.
Lafarge South Africa, the local presence of the international Lafarge Group, the world leader in building materials, provided the ideal solution for constructing a concrete children’s playground at an apartment building in Pretoria. It was a project that bore testament to Lafarge’s ambition of “Building better cities”, which reflects the huge global trend to urbanisation. The group is committed to using its unparalleled technical strength to help provide solutions for building better cities that are more durable and have more housing, are better connected, more beautiful and more desirable places in which people can raise their families.
The building, near the Magistrates’ Court, had been refurbished and converted into residential apartments. Although the centre courtyard appeared well-suited to be transformed into a children’s play area, it was merely a concrete slab over the basement parking and had a load limitation.
The solution was to build the playground using the unique Lafarge Hydromedia™ porous concrete. Lightweight and durable, the versatile Hydromedia™ is available in a variety of colour options, while its rapid stormwater draining characteristic creates a drier, safer, slip-resistant surface for youngsters to play on.
“The creative layout built with 160 cubic metres of our Hydromedia™ concrete was landscaped with a jungle gym, trees, sandpits and artificial turf,” says Herbert Groenewald, Lafarge Readymix’s product manager.
“A drab inner city courtyard was transformed into an attractive play area environment. It was a joy to see the kids having a riotous fun time, safely away from the streets.”
