When a leaking roof started interrupting the good work done by an NPO in Krugersdorp, Sika Gauteng gladly sponsored top-quality waterproofing products and sent a team to apply them.
Sika Gauteng provided a helping hand to fix a leaking roof at Deo Gloria House, a well-established non-profit organisation (NPO) in Krugersdorp that has been feeding the surrounding underprivileged communities for almost ten years.
The NPO provides food on a daily basis to approximately 500 children and 65 senior citizens in the communities of Krugersdorp, Munsiville and Randfontein.
Sika actually provided several helping hands, sending a team of staff members to personally apply the top-quality waterproofing products it had sponsored. Armed with paintbrushes, brooms and scrapers, donated by Academy Brushware, the Sika team tackled the approximately 200m2 that needed to be waterproofed.
Firstly all the cracks and joints were filled and sealed using Sikaflex-11FC (Brown), a one-part, moisture-curing, elastic joint sealant and multi-purpose adhesive based on polyurethane. It is solvent-free and odourless with very low emission, and provides excellent adhesion and bubble-free curing.
Following this, all the joints between the flat roof and walls were sealed and waterproofed with Sika BlackSeal-Lastic, an easily applied, non-toxic, rubberised bitumen emulsion supplied ready for use. It provides non-sag, crack-bridging properties and remains flexible even at low temperatures.
After all the products had dried, Sealoflex Professional (Grey/White) was applied over the entire flat roof. This is a single-component, acrylic-based, waterproofing compound containing special fibre reinforcement that eliminates the need for a separate reinforcing membrane layer.
The weekend after application saw heavy rains hit the Krugersdorp area and a very happy Franco Laubscher, the driving force behind this project, was pleased to report that there was not one leak.
