Main image: Klein Constantia Winery floor rehab in progress

Described as one of the world’s most beautiful wine estates, Klein Constantia is set amidst ancient trees on the upper foothills of the Constantiaberg, with views across False Bay.

Location, location, location

The perfect location for cool climate wines, Klein Constantia produces some of South Africa’s top wines, including one of the world’s best natural sweet wines, Vin de Constance. Therefore, it is important that the winery maintains its optimum conditions throughout the year.

Rehabilitation of the winery floor

The winery floor required rehabilitation and Sika’s world-class products were specified.

The project required the identification and rehabilitation of old and damaged flooring at the winery, with Desmond Van Vuuren from CCRS the main contractor on site and Ian Wilkinson from Apex Construction Consultants the onsite project manager.

The bad substrates were removed and reprofiled with SikaCem®-810, a one-component modified SBR polymer additive that is mixed in with the floor screed to correctly shape the floor falls. Once complete, it was left to cure for 21 days to acquire the strength needed to apply Sikafloor®-20 PurCem®. Sikafloor®-20 Purcem® is a hybrid flooring screed that is ideal for the winery environment as it can withstand high impact, is slip-resistant and allows for steam cleaning.

Proper preparation process

The floors were prepared with a light grind and then termination slots were cut into them to facilitate the holding and gripping of the new floor and to increase its lifespan. Thereafter, the specialist applicator used a hand trowel to apply the Sikafloor®-20 PurCem® at a 6mm thickness, which was then left to cure for 5 to 7 days.

This is a hybrid flooring screed with high impact resistance, non-slip and a steam-cleanable surface is an ideal solution for the winery environment. The completed project met the first-class standards of the top-class winery.
