The award-winning DEA headquarters’ building envelope is insulated with Rigifoam’s Lambdaboard®.
In selecting sustainable products and materials for the hi-spec headquarters of the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA), Boogertman + Partners considered performance, accessibility, durability and workmanship.
The six-star Green Star rated DEA development has added to its accolades, winning an award for sustainable architecture at the recent Pretoria Institute for Architecture (PIA) Awards.
To insulate the building’s highly innovative concrete roof and facade and create a complete insulated envelope, Rigifoam’s Lambdaboard®, a thermosetting closed-cell thermal insulation, was selected. Lambdaboard® boasts the highest R-value per 25mm of any commercially available insulation for the building industry.
It is a rigid board that does not deteriorate through creep or fluctuating temperature cycles, making it suitable for a wide range of applications. It is available with numerous exposed facings to suit application and aesthetics required projects.
Another feature that counted towards Lambdaboard® being the first choice of insulation, was that the product doesn’t contain any HCFCs or HFCs, which was in line with the DEA’s HCFC phase-out programme.
The product passed a full cradle-to-grave lifecycle assessment (LCA), which evaluated everything from the resource-extraction phase to the use and disposal phases.
