ATI’s 100mm Alutherm® FA Fibreglass insulation was a cost-effective solution to ensure thermal comfort inside a Limpopo shopping centre.
In designing Masingita Crossing in Malamulele, Limpopo, Polygon Architects aimed to create a welcoming space for the community to enjoy their shopping experience, despite the region’s high temperatures.
To ensure thermal comfort inside the stores, 10 500m² of 100mm Alutherm® FA Fibreglass was supplied by Africa Thermal Insulations (ATI). Alutherm® is a flexible, heavy-duty bulk insulation material which consists of a fibreglass blanket laminated to a 4mm white bubble layer on one side and a reflective foil layer on the other side.
According to Nolene van den Heever, divisional sales director at ATI,
Alutherm® also has excellent fire-retardant properties and has been tested in accordance with SANS 428 fire performance classification of thermal insulated building envelope systems.
“It is a complete insulation solution in one single product, compared to other insulation products that have to be installed in several layers,” comments Hannelie Smit from Polygon Architects.
“For Masingita Crossing, we selected the 100mm blanket since it proved to be a cost-effective option to comply with the relevant SANS requirements. Because the site is located far from Johannesburg, opting for the 100mm instead of the 135mm meant that delivery was both faster and cheaper,” she explains.
Ben Pretorius from Select Projects, the roofing contractor responsible for the installation, adds that a spacer system was installed to accommodate the thickness of the insulation material and ensure maximum performance.
“Alutherm® is easy to install and gives a neat end-result, especially in areas without ceilings where the insulation is the final finish,” he comments. “We have used it in many other projects and are currently busy to install the same in several auditoria at the University of the North.”
