Innovative lafarge concretes

Lafarge’s concrete solutions contributed to the Manenberg Contact Centre’s awards.

Lafarge South Africa is the local presence of the international Lafarge Group, the world leader in building materials. The Group’s new brand baseline ‘Building better cities’ pledges Lafarge’s commitment to help create sustainable cities and rural developments. The Manenberg Contact Centre in Lansdowne Road, Cape Town, which was recognised with a four-star Green Star SA – Office v1 Design rating, features two innovative types of concrete from Lafarge South Africa. The Agilia™ self-compacting concrete and Artevia™ decorative concrete were used in the environmentally sustainable design.

In designing the centre, the City of Cape Town’s architects set out to create an iconic building in both form and function. Extensive use of highly specified off-shutter finishes for internal and external concrete walls was achieved with Lafarge’s unique Agilia™ Vertical. The exceptional fluidity of Agilia™ allows it to flow easily through reinforcing without the need for vibration. This eliminates some traditional building steps, enhancing productivity and enabling cost optimisation. The fluidity of the product also achieves smoother concrete finishes on vertical applications with a reduced need for remedial work.

In addition, the use of Lafarge’s light-coloured Artevia™ Polish contributed to the high calibre aesthetic appearance of the floors, and helped in reducing the need for more lighting, while improving the thermal efficiency of the building. As a result, the project won the Lafarge South Africa Artevia™ Polish Award for Cape Town-based QS Concrete Grinding & Polishing for the flooring.

The strikingly attractive Manenberg Contact Centre is a source of pride for local communities, who now have a convenient one-stop centre to pay municipal accounts and deal with a wide range of municipal service delivery functions. To help enhance the sense of pride and ownership among the local communities, art components of concrete faҫade panels and landscape features were developed together with the residents.

Lafarge South Africa’s product development manager for readymix, Anathi Zitumane, congratulated the project team on the excellent outcome. He said: “We are proud that our innovative concretes contributed to the success of the centre. Agilia™ and Artevia™ have been stimulating new trends in modern concrete design and setting higher standards of quality finishes in the concrete application industry, in line with Lafarge South Africa’s new brand baseline, ‘Building better cities’.”
