The international carpets, carpet tiles and sports pitches company, Desso, walked away with the prestigious award for most environmentally friendly products at the 2013 Flooring Awards.
The company’s innovative product, called *DESSO AirMaster with DESSO EcoBase backing, has been designed to signifficantly reduce the amount of potentially damaging fine dust in the indoor air. Entrants for this award category needed firstly to motivate why their product is considered eco-friendly and thereafter supply a detailed technical product specification plus details of: production energy saving; guaranteed lifetime; low or no use of volatile materials; recycled materials used; and further recyclability properties of the product.
This unique product was inspired by Desso’s vision to ‘make the floor work for our health and wellbeing’. The company’s research and development team designed a carpet that captures and retains large amounts of fine dust from the indoor air. This type of dust, which can be vacuumed away, is a major cause of respiratory illnesses such as asthma.
“We are delighted to be given this recognition for the DESSO AirMaster carpet. The popularity of the DESSO AirMaster product around the world reinforces our determination to continue producing products that meet key social needs and have the potential to significantly improve health and wellbeing. It is therefore thrilling to receive this award,” commented Andre Dulka, Desso’s Regional Director for the Middle East, Africa and the India region.
DESSO AirMaster with DESSO EcoBase backing combines fine fibres, which retain the smallest particulate matter, with thicker yarns, which capture and retain coarser dust. As a result the product retains eight times more dust compared to a hard floor.
The product achieved Silver C2C (Cradle to Cradle®) Certification, one of the highest levels of attainment embracing five broad areas (material health, material reutilisation, energy, water stewardship and social responsibility). Due to its innovative composition, the product is also fully recyclable in Desso’s own production process.
In addition to the above stringent C2C material health assessment (which also focuses on VOCs), the product was tested and found to be within the VOC limits as defined by the Gemeinschaft umweltfreundlicher Teppichboden (GuT) – the Carpet Industry Association for Environmental Issues founded in Germany.
The estimated product lifetime for DESSO AirMaster with EcoBase backing is approximately 10 – 15 years or longer. “In our sector, we were alarmed at how much carpet waste is thrown away into landfill sites or burned in incinerators. In the UK, for example, 400 000 tonnes of carpet waste goes to landfill every year,” commented Dulka.
Up to 97% of the materials used during production are positively defined (meaning all the ingredients have been assessed as either Green/optimal or Yellow/tolerable according to the C2C assessment criteria). Desso believes in designing goods for the circular economy, in which waste becomes a nutrient for new products either through the technical or the biological cycle. To facilitate this, the company developed a process for taking back used carpet material from their customers and competitors in order to recycle the materials.
*DESSO AirMaster and EcoBase are registered trade marks.
